When I retired a few years ago, I wanted to get involved with a project that makes a difference in someone's life. Ten Thousand Villages fits the bill perfectly!

I enjoy meeting people and I find volunteering here gives me the chance to meet very interesting people with interests worldwide. I figure I'm never too old to learn more about this great world we live in!

I volunteer for two reasons: I believe in the work we do at Ten Thousand Villages, and I love learning new things. When my late husband and I traveled to developing countries, we always purchased craft items but wondered how much of the money actually went to the artisan. The Ten Thousand Villages project gives work to those who need it. Improving the economic status of women markedly improves the welfare of the whole family, so I like volunteering in a store that accomplishes that mission. Every time I volunteer, I run into new art forms, new methods of making things, even countries I've never heard of before. I come home and look up whatever intrigued me that day on the computer. So volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages satisfies both my belief that we should help others, and also my desire to keep learning new things -- tailor-made for a retired person who wants to volunteer.

I volunteer at Ten Thousand Villages because I believe in the mission of fair trade which provides a living wage to artisans in developing countries, and a bonus has been that I love the people that I have met through volunteering.

It is my great hope that by giving some of my time and money to support craftspeople in developing countries, they will be encouraged and lifted out of severe poverty.

I've had the opportunity to travel in a number of developing countries and I always fell for the local crafts. The workmanship always impressed me and I was amazed at the creative use of recycled materials. When I discovered the Ten Thousand Villages in Fredericksburg and realized that the store was part of a not for profit organization that practices fair trade, I knew I'd found a perfect volunteer niche. I signed on immediately!
